Breast Implant Removal (Explant)
Dr. Carlos González performs breast implant removal regularly, and it is one of the procedures women travel to Monterrey for. The before-and-after cases above include explant with breast lift and explant with abdominoplasty.
Why women choose explant
- Capsular contracture — the scar capsule tightens and the breast becomes firm, distorted or painful.
- Rupture or leakage, whether or not it shows on imaging.
- Systemic symptoms many women attribute to their implants — fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, rashes — often grouped under the term breast implant illness.
- A change of mind. Implants placed years ago no longer fit the life or the body of the woman who has them. That is reason enough.
Where we stand on breast implant illness. It is not a formally recognized diagnosis, and no study has established that implants cause these symptoms. What is documented is that a number of women report real, disabling symptoms, and that many of them feel better after removal. We will not promise you a cure for something medicine cannot yet explain — but we will not dismiss what you are feeling either, and we will not ask you to justify your decision.
What the surgery involves
Removal of the implants, with removal of the surrounding scar capsule when it is indicated. The capsule can be taken partially or completely, and in selected cases as a single unit together with the implant — the technique known as en bloc. Which one applies to you depends on the state of the capsule, whether the implant is intact, and where it sits relative to the muscle. That decision is made with your imaging in hand, before you travel, and it is explained to you.
Everything removed is sent for pathology. You receive the written report.
What the breast looks like afterwards
This is the question that matters most and the one least often answered honestly. After years with an implant, the skin and the gland have adapted to a volume that will no longer be there. Depending on how much tissue you have, the size of the implant and the quality of your skin, the options are removal alone, removal with a lift to reposition the breast, or removal with repositioning of your own tissue to restore some upper fullness.
You will be told which of the three applies to you, and shown cases like yours, before you decide.
Coming from the United States or Canada
Explant surgery in the United States commonly runs between US$8,000 and US$15,000 and is rarely covered by insurance, which is why so many women postpone it for years. In Mexico the same operation is a fraction of that.
The process starts with a video consultation with Dr. González — not with a coordinator — where you send your imaging and the record of your original surgery if you have it. You receive a written plan and an itemized quote before booking a flight. Surgery takes place at Hospital Ángeles Valle Oriente. Monterrey is a two-hour flight from Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.
There is an in-person check before you fly home, and a video follow-up afterwards to go over your pathology report.
