Who this surgery is for
Women with uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding or adenomyosis — especially those who have been offered an open (abdominal) hysterectomy and are looking for a minimally invasive alternative. World-Class Medical Facilities in Monterrey
Surgery takes place at Hospital Ángeles Valle Oriente in San Pedro Garza García, Monterrey — accredited operating rooms, advanced laparoscopic and robotic equipment and private rooms, a ~2-hour flight from Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Your wound check and pathology results are reviewed in person before your return flight.
Surgical Procedure
Total laparoscopic hysterectomy: the uterus is removed through a few small incisions under balanced general anesthesia, in 2 to 3 hours, with one night in hospital. Compared with open surgery this means less pain, smaller scars and a faster return to normal activity. Complex cases may be performed with da Vinci robotic assistance. Wound check and pathology results are reviewed in person at 7 to 10 days, before your return flight.

Frequently asked questions
Is a laparoscopic hysterectomy possible if I was offered open surgery?
In most cases, yes. Total laparoscopic hysterectomy removes the uterus through a few small incisions with one night in hospital and a faster recovery than open surgery. Complex cases may be performed with da Vinci robotic assistance. Your imaging is reviewed in the video consultation.
How long is recovery after a laparoscopic hysterectomy?
Short walks from day one, limited activity for 2 weeks with a gradual return to normal, and no lifting over 11 lb (5 kg) or high-impact exercise for 4 weeks. You fly home about a week after surgery, after your in-person wound check.
How long do I need to stay in Monterrey?
For major laparoscopic or robotic surgery (endometriosis, hysterectomy, myomectomy) plan about 14 days: arrive 7 days before surgery (minimum 3), one night in hospital, and fly home about a week after surgery once the in-person wound check at 7–10 days is done. Operative hysteroscopy is a 2-day trip.
Will I receive a surgical plan and a price before I travel?
Yes. After a video consultation you receive a written surgical plan in English with an itemized quote — surgeon, anesthesia, hospital, hotel and transfers — before you decide to book any flight.
What happens after I go home?
Remote follow-up by WhatsApp and video call, with structured questionnaires at 1, 4 and 10 months completed online from your phone. Validated instruments (EHP-30, PHQ-9, GAD-7, Central Sensitization Inventory) measure your progress before and after surgery.

Hysterectomy removes the uterus — what that means for you
A hysterectomy ends menstrual bleeding permanently and makes pregnancy impossible. That is not a side effect; it is the point of the operation, and it is the reason it is chosen when the uterus itself is the problem: adenomyosis, multiple or recurrent fibroids, heavy bleeding that has not responded to medical treatment, or bleeding severe enough to cause anemia.
Your ovaries are a separate decision
Removing the uterus does not mean removing the ovaries. In most cases under age 60 the ovaries are preserved, so you do not go into surgical menopause and you keep your own hormones. The fallopian tubes are usually removed at the same time, because most ovarian cancers are now believed to begin there. Dr. Cantú discusses this with you before surgery, and the plan is written down.
Total or supracervical
| Type | What is removed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Total hysterectomy | Uterus and cervix | The standard. No more Pap smears of the cervix; vaginal cuff checks continue. |
| Supracervical | Uterus, cervix left in place | Occasionally chosen. You keep cyclic spotting in about 10% of cases and still need cervical screening. |
Laparoscopic or robotic — and why not open
Both approaches use small incisions and a camera. The robot adds wristed instruments and three-dimensional vision, which helps when the uterus is very large, when there is deep endometriosis, or when there are adhesions from previous surgery. Open surgery through a large abdominal incision means more pain and a six-week recovery; it is avoided whenever the case allows.
Recovery, honestly
- One night in hospital in most cases.
- Walking the same day; driving in about 10 to 14 days.
- Desk work at 2 weeks, physical work at 4 to 6 weeks.
- Nothing in the vagina — no intercourse, no tampons — for 6 weeks, while the vaginal cuff heals.
- Vaginal spotting for a few weeks is expected and is not a complication.
What a hysterectomy does not fix
It removes bleeding that comes from the uterus. It does not, by itself, treat endometriosis implants outside the uterus: if you have deep endometriosis, the disease has to be excised as well, or pain can continue after the uterus is gone. That is why the pelvis is mapped before surgery and not discovered in the operating room.
